Teaching and Assessment
This 6th‑grade United States History lesson introduced students to major European exploration routes and their influence on colonization. Students used a Google Earth warm‑up, collaborated in pairs with Scribble Maps to trace Columbus’ route, participated in a teacher‑guided explanation supported by an anchor chart and a Canva mini‑presentation, and completed both individual and group digital products: a Canva infographic and a Padlet post. The lesson emphasized digital literacy, historical reasoning, and creative communication aligned with ISTE standards.
Reflection on What Worked
- Digital Engagement: The Google Earth warm‑up captured student interest. Students responded positively to seeing Columbus’ route animated, and many made accurate observations during the discussions.
- Collaborative Mapping: Scribble Maps created an environment for students to work together in pairs. Students traced routes with reasonable accuracy and stayed actively engaged while labeling sponsor nations and colonization effects.
- Structured Explanation: The anchor chart and discussions helped clarify misconceptions. Students showed improved understanding of how geography influenced exploration routes.
- Creative Output: The Canva infographic assignment encouraged students to use Canva’s tools to display their knowledge in visually creative ways. Many students produced organized, accurate infographics that met rubric expectations.
Reflection on What Did Not Work
- Time Management: Some pairs needed additional time to complete the Scribble Maps activity, which required adjusting the lesson activities to fit the schedule.
- Technology Navigation: Several students struggled with navigating the tools in Canva, indicating a need for clearer instruction or additional modeling.
- Group Padlet Posting: Because of the 50-minute class periods, groups did not have time to post to the Group Padlet. To end the lesson on time while still allowing students to work in a group, I created an exit ticket for them to complete. Most Groups completed the entire exit ticket, but others still struggled to finish each part because of time.
